A simple substance, cobalt is a silvery-white, slightly yellowish transition metal with a pinkish or bluish tint. It exists in two crystal modifications: α-Co with a hexagonal densely packed lattice, β-Co with a cubic face-centered lattice, the transition temperature αββ is 427 °C.
