The Commodore VIC-20 (Germany: VC-20; Japan: VIC-1001) is an 8-bit home computer manufactured by Commodore Business Machines. The VIC-20 was announced in June 1980, about three years after the release of the Commodore PET. It is the first computer in the world to sell more than one million copies. In total, more than 2.5 million computers of this model were sold. In the course of competition, the price fell from $299.95 to $55 (below cost), but this more than paid off through sales of software and accessories.
The Commodore VIC-20 was equipped with an 8-bit CSG/MOS 6502 microprocessor clocked at 1.0227 MHz. A VIC chip (Video Interface Chip 6560/6561) was used as a video controller and sound generator. VIC allowed to display color graphics with a resolution of 176 × 184 pixels or 23 lines of 22 characters and reproduce a three-voice sound in a range of three octaves.
