The Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) is Australia's national science research agency that was founded in 1926. CSIRO is an Australian Government corporate entity operating under the Science and Industry research act of 1949, and is accountable for its management of public resources under the Public Governance, Performance and Accountability Act 2013.
The organizations history of scientific research is credited with the invention of fast Wi-Fi, Aerogard, and polymer bank notes. Their research is estimated to provide approximately $3.2 billion in value per year to the Australian economy and requires about a quarter of the value generated in funding from the Australian Government to operate.
The CSIRO Dangerous Pathogens team is led by Professor SS Vasan and researchers there are working on preclinical studies of vaccine candidates under development for COVID-19. The novel coronavirus pandemic, the preclinical response project is in partnership with CEPI. CSIRO also has manufacturing facilities to support the scaleup of vaccine antigens in development at the University of Queensland.
