Cropin is an agritech company known for its SaaS-based solutions aimed to enhance the traditional agricultural process with the help of cloud computing. Its products include a farm management solution, farm risk and assessment solution, supply chain traceability solution, and seed-to-shelf traceability solution. It was founded in 2010 by Krishna Kumar and Kunal Prasad, the CEO and COO of the company, respectively. Initially, Cropin directly interacted with the farmers, but in 2011, it shifted its business model to B2B.
Cropin is known for optimizing and maximizing the per-acre value of farmland for the farming community with the aid of technologies like artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, and deep tech. Since its inception, Cropin has been able to digitize over 16 million acres of farmlands. Its database consists of about 7 million farmers with in-depth data on 400 crops and about 10,000 crop varieties.
Cropin’s first SaaS product, SmartFarm, was launched in 2012 and is now known as SmartFarm Plus. It is intended to be used by smaller farms to predict and monitor farm production with weather and satellite data. SmartFarm Plus enables the digitization of farms to enable data-driven decision-making with a farm management solution.
Cropin introduced farm-to-fork traceability solution in 2016. RootTrace, formerly known as mWarehouse, is designed for farming companies that are seeking to expand by building facilities to manage the output that comes with the harvest. It helps those companies by offering features that would make a product traceable, such as QR codes and barcodes.
The company also developed SmartRisk, a predictive modelling solution using AI and machine learning. SmartRisk primarily aids banks and insurance companies in evaluating risks at the farm plot level. In the first quarter of 2019, Cropin used this technology to conduct the crop cutting experiment (CCE) using scalable yield mapping technology through remote sensing in the Koppal and Bellary districts of Karnataka.
AcreSquare is a software solution that was developed by Cropin, and it acts as a communication channel. It helps farmers to record all in-field activities, administer help or alerts, and digitize farm-level operations. It is intended to give the farmers the most up-to-date information about their farms so they can make the best decisions for their operations.
The company developed a cloud platform called Cropin Cloud. Farmers and others in the agriculture industry can use the platform to accelerate business growth using the technology that Cropin has developed. Clients using Cropin Cloud can access solutions such as Cropin Apps, Cropin Data Hub, and Cropin Intelligence, the company's AI models.
Cropin has partnered with many companies, organizations, and government entities to implement their solutions in India and globally. In 2017, it started to work with ITC, McCain, Mahindra & Mahindra, Mars, BigBasket, Sahyadri, and state and central governmental agencies. In 2018, Cropin started to work with the government of Karnataka to digitize the farming sector.
Cropin partnered with the government of India in 2018 and 2019 to implement crop-cutting experiments through AI and machine learning for the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana, a crop insurance scheme backed by the government. In 2019, Cropin started to collaborate with Punjab Agri Export Corporation to develop a system so potato seeds could be traced to prevent counterfeit seeds.
The company became part of a global partnership in 2021 when it joined the European Carbon+ Farming Coalition, an initiative by the World Economic Forum to achieve carbon neutrality goals of the European Green Deal. In the same year, Cropin joined the goal of WEF for the carbon neutrality of the food ecosystem. Later in the year, Cropin confirmed major partnerships with firms such as True Digital and Mucheki Consulting. Its partnerships expanded even more globally in 2022 when Cropin partnered with Heaven Sprout Foods to enhance agricultural digitization in the Latin American region.
