In 2004, J.P. Morgan & Co created a venture fund (the $75M Bay Area Equity Fund I) led by Nancy Pfund which made a number of impact investments including in Tesla Motors in 2006. The fund spun out of JP Morgan in 2008. In 2008, Pfund and Cynthia Ringo partnered and raised Fund II (the $150.8M DBL Equity Fund – BAEF II). In 2015 DBL partnered with Ira Ehrenpreis who led the clean tech practice of Technology Partners to found DBL Partners and successfully raise a $400m impact fund.
DBL’s Managing Partners are Nancy Pfund, Ira Ehrenpreis and Cynthia Ringo.
DBL has invested in a range of companies primarily with a focus on four sectors:
- Clean tech
- Health care
- Information technology
- Sustainable products & services sectors
DBL has invested in all three companies in which Elon Musk is substantially involved: Tesla Motors, SpaceX and SolarCity something Pfund has said is "not for the faint of heart”.
