DVB Bank, now merged with its sole shareholder, DZ BANK AG Deutsche Zentral-Genossenschaftsbank, Frankfurt am Main, was a Frankfurt-based bank company founded in 1923. DZ BANK is the second-largest bank in Germany. It is the central institution of the Volksbanken raiffeisenbanken Cooperative Financial Network and the central bank for approximately 800 cooperative banks in Germany, in which it holds the majority interest. It also serves companies and institutions as a commercial bank. The bank has numerous locations in Germany and other countries.
Deutsche Verkehrs-Kredit-Bank AG (DVKB) was founded in 1923 by Dresdner Bank, the Bayerische Vereinsbank, Bayerische Hypothekenbank, Commerz-und Privatbank, the private banking house Bleichröder and various industrial corporations. The establishment's purpose was to introduce a bankable practice for handling the freight payments and fee settlements of the Reichsbahn (German State Railway) in Germany.
By 1930, DVKB increased its number of exchange offices to thirty-nine, existing in railway stations and border crossings. Five years later, DVKB moved into its own premises at Unter den Linden 10 in Berlin. And in 1949, the bank's main offices in Frankfurt and Hamburg were brought together to create the company's headquarters in Frankfurt.
In 1991, the bank changed its corporate name to Deutsche Verkehrs-Bank AG. In 1997, it changed its name again to remove the hyphen and become Deutsche VerkehrsBank AG.
On April 1, 2021, the Board of Managing Directors of DVB Bank SE announced the intention to merge into its sole shareholder, DZ BANK AG Deutsche Zentral-Genossenschaftsbank, Frankfurt am Main. The merger was finalized on August 12, 2022. The legal entity known as DVB Bank SE is no longer in existence.
