Dalida, born Yolanda Cristina Gigliotti, was a French-Italian singer. She was born on July 17, 1933, in Cairo, Egypt, to Italian parents, and moved to France in her 30's. Dalida was married to Lucien Morisse. The singer died on May 3, 1987 in Paris, France.
Dalida performed and recorded in about ten languages, including Arabic, Italian, Greek, German, French, English, Japanese, Hebrew, Dutch and Spanish. The singer spent most of her time in France and received French citizenship in 1961 after marriage, while maintaining her Italian citizenship.
The singer received the Oscar mondial du succès du disque (the "World Oscar of Recording Success") twice. Her thirty-year career began in 1956 and ended with her last album in 1986, a half-year before her death. In May 1987, Dalida died by suicide after bouts of depression.
