Daniel Quillen (June 27, 1940 – April 30, 2011) was an American mathematician who was known for his work in algebraic topology and algebraic K-theory. He was born in Orange, New Jersey, and held citizenship in the United States. Quillen received his secondary education at Newark Academy and later pursued higher education at Harvard University.
Throughout his career, Quillen received numerous accolades, including the prestigious 1978 Fields Medal. His doctoral advisor at Harvard was noted mathematician Raoul Bott. Quillen went on to mentor doctoral students such as Varghese Mathai and Kenneth Brown.
Daniel Quillen passed away on April 30, 2011 in San Francisco. His contributions to the field of mathematics have left a lasting impact on algebraic topology and algebraic K-theory.
