Dave was a cannabis technology company offering cannabis consumers to purchase legal cannabis products at state-licensed cannabis retailers and skip any line when they arrived at the store to pick up their order. It also allowed state-licensed cannabis dispensaries to list their stores and their inventory through Dave. Dave also offered product recommendation based on buying habits and a rewards platform for recreational cannabis users.
Compared to Eaze, a competitor in the space operating in the Los Angeles area, customers of Dave were able to pick their product and the dispensary they wished to pick up from. Eaze would match customer orders to the appropriate dispensary to deliver the product quickly.
Dave was formed in May, 2015 when Josiah Tullis joined his startup with another Seattle-based cannabis technology company called Dave Can Help, which they simplified to Dave. The idea for Dave, and Canary, came from the order-ahead feature offered by Starbucks, as many of the dispensaries in Washington saw long lines.
While Washington State legalized recreational marijuana in 2012, delivery of recreational or medical marijuana was still banned in 2015, and in early 2015 city officials were promising a crackdown on cannabis delivery. During this time, Dave emphasized their similarity to mobile applications such as Postmates and emphasized they were an ancillary product to the business, and at no point handling the flowers. During this time Dave also moved to charging stores to be listed through the application, similar to competitors Weed Maps and Leafly.
In late 2015, Dave closed due to laws surrounding the legal and recreational cannabis industry and the lack of stability or transparency within those laws.
