David Patterson is a computer scientist and engineer born on November 16, 1947, in Evergreen Park, Illinois. He holds United States citizenship. Patterson was educated at the University of California, Los Angeles and South High School in Torrance, California.
As an instance of a person in the field of computer science, Patterson has been both a doctoral advisor and a mentor to many students. His doctoral advisor was Gerald Estrin, while notable students who have studied under his guidance include David Oppenheimer, Garth Gibson, David Ungar, and Paul Hansen (tenor).
Patterson received the prestigious 2017 Turing Award for his work in computer science. He is currently based in the United States.
