The legendary hockey club playing in the NHL.
The club was founded in 1926 and was originally called the Cougars.
The first season of 1926/1927 was a failure, the team finished last in the American division. For the first 7 years, Detroit made the playoffs only 2 times and lost there in the first round.
In 1930, the Cougars changed their name to the Falcons, and in 1932 the club was bought by millionaire James Norris and the team got the name Red Wings.
The Red Wings lost the first Stanley Cup final to Chicago in 1934, and in the 1935/1936 season the team won the regular season for the first time and also won the Stanley Cup. And the following year, they became the first American team in the league to win two Stanley Cups in a row.
The next Stanley Cup came to Detroit in 1943. Detroit won the trophy in 1950, 1952, 1954, 1955. Also set a record by winning the NHL regular season 7 times from the 1948/1949 season to 1954/1955.
Delee Detroit has been waiting for new trophies for a long time. In 1982 the club changed hands. Mike and Marian Ilici became the new owner of the team. In 1983, the club drafted Steve Yzerman, who would become the club's perennial leader and legend. The club began to propagate winning traditions and already in the late 1980s began to reach the conference finals. Also, such hockey players as Nicklas Erik Lidström, Vyacheslav Fetisov were drafted. And in 1993, the famous Scotty Bowman became the manager. He assembled a dream team in Detroit. Already in the 1994/1995 season, the Red Wings reached the final of the Stanley Cup, where they lost to New Jersey. The following season, the team set a record for the most wins in the regular season, but the Stanley Cup was again not won. He came in the 1996/1997 season, in the final in four matches, the Red Wings beat Philadelphia. In 1998, Detroit took the ninth cup.
The next Stanley Cup was won in 2001. After this victory, which was a record for coach Scotty Bowman, after that he announced his retirement. And the Stanley Cup returned to Detroit only in 2008. And so far this is the last trophy for the red wings.
