Dimorphotheca is a genus in the Asteraceae family, which contains approximately fifteen species. Dimorphotheca are native to South Africa. Members of Dimorphotheca include Dimorphotheca aurantiaca (African daisy), Dimorphotheca sinuata (Glandular Cape marigold / Namaqualand daisy / Orange Namaqualand daisy), Dimorphotheca ecklonis (Cape Marguerite / Sunday's River Daisy) and Dimorphotheca pluvialis (White African Daisy / Weather Prophet). Dimorphotheca are popular ornamental plants. The seed oil of Dimorphotheca species, dimorphecolic acid, contains a high amount of the fatty acid dimorphecolic acid, which has potential applications in the manufacturing of paints, inks, lubricants, plastics, and nylon. β-Dimorphecolic acid was shown to be a protective agent in rice plants and to have anti-angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) properties. Substances with anti-ACE properties can potentially be used in medicine to lower blood pressure.
