Dragon Ball is an anime series created by Toshiki Inoue and Takao Koyama that was originally launched on February 26, 1986. It was discontinued on April 19, 1989. The series, produced by Toei Animation, is based in Japan and belongs to the adventure, comedy, and fantasy genres. Dragon Ball was initially a manga series called Dragon Boy, which was a loose adaptation of the Chinese legend Journey to the West.
The story follows a young boy named Tanton on his quest to return a princess to her homeland. Due to its unpopularity, the manga series was rewritten and adapted into Dragon Ball, with all character personalities changed except for Goku's. This re-adaptation soon became a hit and was eventually made into an anime series.
The anime and manga industries in Japan have been home to several competitors of Dragon Ball, including Naruto, One Piece, One Piece: The Movie, Gurren Lagann, Sword Art Online, Sword Art Online II, and Hunter X Hunter. Dragon Ball is an instance of a creative work.
