He was a computer scientist and mathematician known for inventing the relational model for database management while working for IBM. This invention served as the theoretical basis for relational databases and relational database management systems.
Codd was educated at Poole Grammar School, Exeter College, Oxford, and the University of Michigan. While at the University of Michigan, his doctoral advisor was John Henry Holland.
One of his notable works includes Codd's cellular automaton. In 1981, Codd received the prestigious Turing Award.
