He was born in the family of Oxford Professor of Philosophy John Lucas. He studied at the Winchester Private School, the London School of Economics and the Jagiellonian University. Since 1986, he has worked as a correspondent for The Economist magazine in various Eastern European countries. Since 1996 — Berlin correspondent, and in 1998-2002 — Chief of the Moscow bureau. Speaks German, Polish and Russian.
