Eliel Saarinen (born August 20, 1873, in Rantasalmi) was a Finnish-American architect and urban planner, known for his work in both Finland and the United States. Holding citizenship in both countries, Saarinen was educated at the Helsinki University of Technology.
Throughout his career, Saarinen designed notable buildings such as the Des Moines Art Center, the National Museum of Finland, and Hvitträsk. He was also the father of renowned architect Eero Saarinen.
Eliel Saarinen passed away on July 1, 1950, in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan.
