Elizabeth City State University (ECSU) is a public educational institution located in Elizabeth City, North Carolina. It is part of the University of North Carolina System and was founded in 1891. The university operates in the education, higher education, and university sectors, as well as being classified as a historically black college and university (HBCU).
ECSU is accredited by the Association of Technology, Management, and Applied Engineering, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges, and the Engineering Technology Accreditation Commission (ETAC) of ABET. The university's motto is "To Live is To Learn".
In addition to its affiliation with the University of North Carolina System, ECSU is also affiliated with the National Collegiate Athletic Association, the American Association of State Colleges and Universities, and the National Athletic Association. Jim Hansen is an investor in the university.
