Enbridge is a Canadian natural gas distribution provider. It was founded in 1949 under the name Interprovincial Pipe Line Company. The company operates across North America and moves about 30 percent of the crude oil produced in North America. It also acts as an investor and focuses on renewable energy sources such as offshore windmills.
The company has multiple branches which each specialize in different areas of the industry. One branch is the operation of crude oil and liquid pipelines. These pipelines run across North America and there are over 17,000 miles of pipe.Enbridge also has services for natural gas transmission and midstream. The company states that it moves 20 percent of all gas consumed in the United States with its network of pipes for gas transmission. Another branch of the company is Enbridge Gas, Inc., which is a natural gas utility that serves a reported 75 percent of Ontario residents. The gas is delivered to residents through distribution mainlines and service lines.
Enbridge began investing in renewable energy in 2002 when the company invested in a wind farm. The company states that it has invested more than $6,000,000,000 into renewable energy projects. Such projects include solar energy projects, a geothermal project, and a hydroelectric facility. The company has invested in over forty renewable energy projects since 2002.
