The need for highly skilled and technical Marines has increased to meet the demands of the latest military technology. An excerpt from the USMC’s Training and Education Command (TECOM) Vision and Strategy for 21st Century Learning from Major General Mullen states, “Operating in the Information Age demands that we elevate our instructional methodologies to create a learning environment commensurate with the environment in which our Marines will fight. This information age developmental approach will focus on active, student-centered learning using a problem-posing methodology where our students/trainees are responsible for their own learning and supported by skilled instructors who facilitate learning experiences”. The process for training Marines and other personnel from other service branches has remained relatively unchanged across the DoD. The USMC needs an enterprise training solution that leverages the latest training technologies and learning systems centered around a digital twin framework to achieve TECOM's vision of updating instructional methodologies to the industry 4.0 level. Digital Twins provides students with an active learning experience that provide immersive experiences and studies have shown that cognitive outcomes of students are higher when utilizing an active learning approach based on Kolb’s model. This enterprise training solution must connect authoritative digital twin models from existing USMC digital twin efforts as part of a digital engineering initiative to streamline new platform development, with a comprehensive, domain-agnostic, and persistent training platform for automated content creation and tailored learning guidance to an eLearning system (such as the USMC’s Moodle platform). In addition to this, the solution must allow trainers to create content and curriculum as well as import 2D and 3D files. To meet the USMC’s needs, Enduvo proposes building upon our Immersive Virtual Classroom (IVC) software platform, which is in active use with the USAF maintenance personnel and part of the USAF’s Member Operations Training Analytics and Reports (MOTAR). Enduvo will prototype a variant of IVC for the USMC, the Marine Corps Virtual Classroom (MCVC). Enduvo’s approach for this effort is to gather detailed requirements from key stakeholders for an USMC enterprise training solution to validate if enhancements to IVC will meet the USMC’s needs and to determine what custom MCVC tools need to be developed to create and import content for MCVC.
