The Ensembl genome database project is an online platform that is publicly available which automatically annotates genomes and integrates them with other biological data. Other data is available on the database including comparative genomics, variation, and regulatory data.
The project is an open source software engineering project which is intended to create a portable database containing a bioinformatics framework referencing the sequences of large genomes. It curates the human genome and 80 other vertebrate species. It annotates known genes so that the data can be integrated into existing data and is capable of making predictions for new genes. It can be accessed via website or the Ensembl software system and its intended audience is researchers from molecular biology and clinical backgrounds, researchers working on genome experiments, and bioinformaticians.
Ensembl has stated that it intends to release a new website in 2020 and will release a manual explaining how to utilize the website.
