Eric Kandel, born in Vienna on November 7, 1929, is an American psychiatrist, neuroscientist, psychologist, and biochemist. He holds citizenship in the United States.
Kandel's early education includes attending the Yeshivah of Flatbush and Erasmus Hall High School. He later earned degrees from Harvard University and Columbia University. Kandel also studied at the New York University School of Medicine. One of his doctoral students is Kaang Bong-kiun.
He is known for his work on the physiology of learning and memory and has made significant contributions to the academic disciplines of neuroscience, psychoanalysis, and psychiatry. Eric Kandel has received numerous prestigious awards for his work, including the 2000 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, the Wolf Prize in Medicine, the Lasker Award, the Dickson Prize, the Harvey Prize, and the National Medal of Science.
