He is known for his work in the fields of biochemistry and chemistry and gained his education from the University of Vienna and Yale University.

Chargaff was a talented writer as well and passed away in New York City in 2002. He was a doctoral advisor to Boris Magasanik and studied under Fritz Feigl.
