Eskom Holdings SOC Ltd is an electric utility company, 100% state-owned by the South African Government. It generates, transports, and distributes approximately 95% of South Africa’s electricity – making up 60% of the total electricity consumed on the African continent. Eskom is the world’s eleventh-largest power utility in terms of generating capacity, ranks ninth in terms of sales, and boasts the world's largest dry-cooling power station. The company was founded in 1923 and is headquartered in the suburb of Sandton, Johannesburg Municipality, Gauteng, South Africa.
Eskom's Generation Division maintains a varied portfolio with 30 plants that have a nominal generating capacity of 44 172MW. Eskom coal-fired power stations produce approximately 90% of its electricity, using over 90 million tons of coal per annum. Other Eskom plants utilize Biomass, Hydro, Nuclear, Solar, Wave, and Wind.
