An essay is a body of writing that reflects the argument or opinion of the author on a chosen subject. The word essay comes from the French word essayer, meaning "to attempt." Essays are typically short to medium in length, although this is a subjective measurement relative to the writer and audience. While there is no official minimum or maximum word count that classifies a piece of writing as an essay, it must be long enough to include a defining introduction, supporting body paragraph(s), and a conclusion to the topic. An essay focuses on one subject, presented in an argumentative or persuasive manner in an attempt to persuade the reader into agreeing with the author's point of view. Information from reputable sources can be cited in essays to support the author's argument. Still, essays are considered subjective pieces of writing due to the author's stated opinion.
