Eugene Andrew Cernan, also known as Gene, was born on March 14, 1934, in Bellwood, Illinois. Most widely known for his career as an astronaut, Cernan also held several other occupations, including officer in the armed forces, aircraft pilot, fighter pilot, and businessperson. He held citizenship in the United States.
Cernan was educated at Purdue University and the Naval Postgraduate School. During his career, he received various awards, including the Naval Aviator Astronaut Insignia, Navy Distinguished Service Medal, Distinguished Flying Cross (United States), National Defense Service Medal, NASA Distinguished Service Medal, NASA Exceptional Service Medal, Wright Brothers Memorial Trophy, and was inducted into the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame.
Eugene Cernan passed away on January 16, 2017, in Houston.
