The European Space Agency is an institution that offers funding for the development of space-based services, products, and projects. The organization was founded in Paris, Ile-de-France, France.
The European Space Agency holds the mission of developing Europe's space capabilities. The organization has teamed with international partners and companies to have humans return to the moon within the early 2020s. They plan to first launch lunar rovers, telerobotics, and hybrid surface power systems to prepare for drilling and human arrivals. They look to find and harvest lunar resources such as water ice between the lunar poles. If found, the water would significantly reduce the costs of living on the moon.
In addition to finding resources on the moon, the ESA is looking to build a radio telescope on the far side of the moon to gain access to images unhindered by radio emissions from Earth.
The ESA also has plans to launch a program to get to Mars, and has a group comprised of researchers from Belgium, France, Sweden, and the United Kingdom.
