Face.com was a Tel Aviv-based company specializing in the development of software for mobile facial recognition. It was founded in 2008 and launched its first product in 2009. In 2012, it was acquired by Meta, then known as Facebook, for an undisclosed amount. Although it was acquired as an "aquihire," where the idea was that the company would continue to develop products, the website for the company itself is no longer accessible for the purpose of viewing information about Face.com.
The company's products mainly provided solutions for automated facial recognition of photos on the Internet. They were available for use on desktops and mobile devices. Face.com's products were used by several third parties prior to the company's acquisition and it is reported that those third parties were still able to use the API after the acquisition.
Face.com's main product was a technology that could recognize faces when photos were uploaded and allow the user to add a tag to the photo, which would connect the person's social media, specifically Facebook account, to the photo. Other apps that were released by Face.com on Facebook were called Photo Finder and Photo Tagger, the latter of which is still used on Facebook today. Photo Finder was a feature that allowed users to find untagged photos of themselves on the platform so they could tag themselves.
