FileMaker Inc. is a business software platform allowing users to create custom business applications. It is commonly used to create custom databases that allow businesses to share information, manage projects, and track assets. In 2020, Filemaker had an estimated 1 million end-users.
The current iteration of the company was launched in 1998, though the product was developed by Nashoba System in Concord Massachusetts in 1984. The original Filemaker platform was developed from of Nashoba's Nutshell DOS-database system and incorporated the use of Macintosh's GUI. The platform's primary competitor was Microsoft File. The company was acquired by Apple through its spin off company in 1986. In 1998, Apple brought all of its Claris holdings in-house, and established Filemaker as an independent company. Filemaker has been constantly updated since its creation. By 2020, there had been 18 versions released.
In August 2019, Filemaker was rebranded as Claris International as part of a growth plan to expand the business solution offerings of the platform. This plan included investing in strategic areas such as artificial intelligence and augmented reality.
