Fingerprint, formerly known as FingerprintJS, is a developer of an API for fingerprinting devices on the web for fraud detection. This service disidentifies a fingerprint from a device by generating a unique identifier of a browser without using cookies and allowing users to detect account fraud and ensure that trading, exchange, and transfer operations are safe.
The company was founded in 2019 by CEO Dan Pinto and CTO Valentin Vasilyev and is headquartered in Chicago, Illinois. The company's technology is based on an open-source Javascript-language project started in 2012 by Vasilyev. The technology uses different techniques, such as audio sampling, font detection, and browser plugin probing to distinguish unique visitors to a web application or website.
The company's customers have included ebay, Target, US Bank, Booking.com, TD Ameritrade, Agoda, Coinbase, Home Credit, Rockstar, Checkout.com, Western Union, Yahoo!.
Fingerprint's platform works to prevent digital fraud by identifying users. The platform uses a combination of browser fingerprinting, IP/URL analysis, device analysis, and machine learning to identify unique sources. Further, the platform uses data from the visitor's browser, device, and pattern of use to generate a more unique visitorID that can better associate patterns of fraud with specific visitors. This method of identification is also undeterred by incognito browsing, VPNs, cookie blockers, or related anonymizing software through these techniques.
The Fingerprint device identification platform is built to be used for fraud detection only, and no visitor consent is required to remain in compliance with GDPR and CCPA, with the company saying their platform never automatically tracks traffic and never does cross-domain tracking.
Fingerprint's device and user fingerprinting platform can be used to detect account sharing users, through visitor-login mapping and flagged account sharing identification, which can help convert users into new customers. The account sharing prevention works to deduplicate behavior to identify users, even as user behavior changes over time, versus new users borrowing another account.
Fingerprint's bot detection, BotD, is an open-source JavaScript bot detection library to accurately identify bots, providing full transparency into what data is collected. The library is built to be able to be integrated into a website with a few lines of JavaScript and to be uncomplicated.
