Focus is a German-language news magazine published by Hubert Burda Media and established in 1993 as an alternative to the Der Spiegel weekly news magazine. Focus is one of the three most widely circulated German weeklies, alongside Der Spiegel and Stern.
Founded by Helmut Markwort, the concept originated from Helmut Markwort and Hubert Burda. After the founding, Helmut Markwort went from the editor in chief to become publisher in 2009 and has been listed in the publication's masthead as founding editor in chief since 2017. While the current editor in chief as of March 2016 has been Robert Schneider.
The editorial approach of Focus is political reporting, similar to the reporting done in Der Spiegel, along with topics considered to be relevant to everyday life, including topics in the realms of family, health, finances, and career. Focus his also one of the most widely circulated news magazines in Germany, but has sustained declines, with individual sales dropping from 782,685 to 438,055 copies sold from the 4th quarter of 1998 to the 2nd quarter of 2017.
