Food52 is a company offering an online food marketplace with a curated shop, home and kitchen content, and a community for kitchen and home enthusiasts that is headquartered in New York City, new York and was founded in 2009 by Amanda Hesser and Mrrill Stubbs.
On January 1, 2011 Food52 announced raising $750,000 in seed funding from Lerer Hippeau and Joanne Wilson.
On December 1, 2012 Food52 announced raising $2.3 million in series A funding from BDMI (lead investor), Zelkova Ventures, Vocap Investment Partners, Lerer Hippeau, Grape Arbor VC, and Joanne Wilson. The founders of Food52 wrote about their plans for the company's series A funding in a blog post by writing:
Over the next year, we’ll be improving our user experience for all mobile devices. We have a great new shop, unlike any other, in the works. And we’ll be expanding our publishing platform through an innovative partnership with Random House, Inc., which publishes renowned food writers Ina Garten, Alice Waters, and Yotam Ottolenghi.
On September 30, 2014 Food52 announced expanding their series A funding round with $6 million in additional funding from 14W (lead investor), Walden Venture Capital, Vayner/RSE, Scripps Networks, Localglobe, and BDMI.
On July 24, 2017 Food52 announced raising $4.3 million in series B funding from 14W.
On October 3, 2019 Food52 announced raising $83 million in series C funding from TCS Capital Management. TCS Capital Management acquired a majority stake in Food52 which valued the company at over $100 million at the time of series C funding. Food52 generated approximately $30 million in revenue during the past year before receiving their series C funding but did not generate a profit.
