The Free University of Brussels (Université Libre de Bruxelles) is a private university located in Brussels, Belgium. It was founded in 1834 by Pierre-Théodore Verhaegen, and currently has around 4,400 employees. The institution operates in the fields of higher education and university academics. Its motto is "Scientia Vincere Tenebras," which translates to "Conquering darkness by science".
As an educational institute, the university holds various accreditations. These include endorsements from the European Foundation for Management Development, Directorate General for Non-Compulsory Education and Scientific Research, Accreditation Organisation of the Netherlands and Flanders, and the Flemish Ministry of Education and Training of Belgium.
The Free University of Brussels is affiliated with several prominent organizations, such as the European University Association and the Network of Universities from the Capitals of Europe. It also has a subsidiary called the Wiener – Anspach Foundation. While actively engaged in research, the university has been assigned one patent.
In addition to its primary name, the Free University of Brussels is also known as Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Université Libre de Bruxelles, and Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB). Its main campus is situated in the City of Brussels, Brussels Hoofdstedelijk Gewest, Belgium.
