Gardners Candies is a candy company located in Tyrone, Pennsylvania that was founded in 1897 and is best known for its Original Peanut Butter Meltaway candy.
Gardners Candies was founded in 1897 by James "Pike" Gardner, then sixteen years old, in Tyrone, Pennsylvania. It originated as a small store in Tyrone and soon expanded into selling candy, popcorn, and peanuts from horse-drawn wagons at local fairs and carnivals.
Garnders Candies claims to have originated the heart-shaped box of chocolates in 1910. The company was sold to Sarris Candies in 1997.
Gardners Candies has over ten retail stores in the Central Pennsylvania region, including its flagship store in downtown Tyrone which includes a candy museum in addition to the candy stores and ice cream parlors found at its other locations. Gardners also distributes nationally with its parent company Sarris Candies and sells directly through on-line and mail order.
