Garlic ( lat. Állium satívum ) is a perennial herbaceous plant ; species of the genus Onion of the family Amaryllidaceae ( Amaryllidaceae ) of the subfamily Onion ( Allioideae ), previously placed in an independent now abolished family of Onion ( Alliaceae ).
A popular vegetable crop among many peoples around the world, which is explained by the pungent taste and characteristic smell associated with the presence of organic sulfides (thioethers) in the plant. Bulb slices ("cloves") are used as a seed , eaten (raw or cooked, as a condiment). Leaves , arrows and flower stalks are also edible, consumed mainly in young plants.
Garlic is widely used in medicine due to its antiseptic action.
