Genomics

Genomics is a scientific discipline focusing on understanding of all genes, regulatory sequences, and non-coding regions of genomes. Genomes are the set of biological instructions made up of deoxyribonucleic acids (DNA) that create the biological functions of all living organisms. Genomics is the study of the evolution, structure, function, mapping, and editing of genomes. Genomics differs from genetics because it focuses on understanding the genome as a whole, while genetics focuses more on the function of individual genes. Subcategories of genomics include epigenomics, transcriptomics, and proteomics. The primary research tools used for genomic research are high throughput DNA sequencing and bioinformatic technologies.
