Globalstar is a leading provider of satellite solutions for businesses and individuals offering customizable Satellite Commercial IoT Solutions. Globalstar helps companies to track and monitor their fleet and equipment to prevent loss or manage theft alert and recovery.
Globalstar serves the government and public safety, transportation, energy, construction, commercial maritime, agriculture, and forestry industries. Globalstar's product range includes Commercial IoT, SPOT for Business, and Voice and Data.
Globalstar satellites provide operability worldwide, aiming to connect users in areas where traditional networks are unreliable or unavailable. The company's satellite products supply voice and data services, commercial IoT and SPOT business tracking, and messaging products for companies, workers, and individuals in remote business and recreational applications.
The company's two-way duplex, one-way commercial IoT and SPOT products transmit more than 1.8 billion messages a year across over 100 countries. The Globalstar satellites pick up signals from over 80% of the Earth's surface and transmit customer signals via CDMA technology to antennas at the appropriate terrestrial gateway. The signals are then routed through the local networks.
The company's proprietary satellite path diversity and gateway diversity technologies allow customers to automatically connect to the optimal satellite or gateway, which ensures uninterrupted communication in suboptimal conditions, such as those associated with mountainous areas or urban canyons.
Globalstar offers individual service plans, based on the selected product and preferred message capacity. The plans come in monthly and annual options. The plans range from Basic to Unlimited at $8.95 per month to $2,400 per year for different devices.
Satellite IoT devices allow businesses to monitor their operations remotely and provide tracking on the Globalstar LEO satellite network. Devices in this product range include SmartOne Solar, SmartOne C, ST100, STX3, STINGR, STX3 Development Kit, and STINGR Development Kit.
SPOT Satellite Messengers deliver location-based tracking and messaging in personnel safety management. These devices include a one-touch S.O.S. button that connects the user with local emergency response teams around the world. This product range comprises SPOT Gen4, SPOT X, and SPOT Trace.
Globalstar provides general-purpose satellite communication solutions that keep users connected in areas without cellular coverage. These devices comprise talk, text, and email functionality and relay information or trigger search and rescue services in the event of an emergency. The Voice and Data product range includes the GSP-1700 and GSP-1600 devices.
SmartOne Solar is a solar-powered satellite IoT device with remote monitoring and tracking capabilities. It lets users configure reporting times and intervals for custom information delivery. SmartOne Solar offers:
- NiMH rechargeable batteries deliver up to 10 years of life
- ATEX and intrinsic safety certifications IECEx, IP68/69K, and HERO
- External inputs for sensor integrations such as door open/close, temperature threshold sensor, and other threshold level monitoring
SmartOne Solar costs $299.00.
SmartOne C is a small, low-power commercial IoT device designed for asset tracking, lightweight input, and event monitoring. This asset tracking device can be line-powered, or in the absence or interruption of external power, it will automatically switch to operating on battery backup power. SmartOne C utilizes motion sensors, comparative GPS positions, and custom configured sensors to gather and transmit asset status information. SmartOne C costs $130.00.
SPOT Trace is an asset management and theft-recovery device that provides satellite GPS location services and movement alert monitoring, independent of cell towers, radios and Wi-Fi.
SPOT Trace sends its GPS coordinates within 8 meters to smartphones, tablets or computers and allows managers to monitor assets and track their movements in near real-time via integrated mapping platforms. SPOT Trace costs $99.99.
ST100 combines Nordic's nRF52832, BLE soft device, an accelerometer, and GPS into a module with tracker and BLE capabilities that enables 3rd party companies to develop and deploy their own custom applications using the Globalstar Satellite Network, with no additional ground infrastructure required to transmit data. This module provides one-way communications for tracking assets, BLE sensor events, and custom user payloads in environments. Configuration of the device is achieved via BLE through an accompanying mobile app.
Globalstar also offers data management and mapping services, providing remote visibility into the operations of businesses. These services include the automation of operational metrics by monitoring asset and personnel location, movement, dwell times, preventive or scheduled maintenance, utilization hours, and positioning data to create reports.
The map below shows coverage for the GSP-1600, GSP-1700, Globalstar 2900, and Sat-Fi satellite two-way voice and duplex data devices.
Primary coverage is indicated by the orange area and fringe coverage (areas where the signal is the weakest) is represented by the black diagonal stripes. The Home Zone is demarcated by a green outline. Within the Home Zone, Globalstar North American customers can freely roam without incurring additional airtime costs.
The map below shows the coverage area for the SmartOne Solar, SmartOne C, ST100, STINGR, STX3, SPOT Gen4, SPOT Trace, SPOT Gen3, and SPOT X commercial IoT and business devices.
Spotter uses Globalstar's network for its satellite-based mapping platform which it can use to navigate and find horses that roam in remote areas of Central Asia. As an additional service, Spotter's horse registration platform is used by clients to register their horses with microchips which is linked to the livestock theft prevention division of the General Police Department in Mongolia.
Weyerhaeuser is a provider of timber, land, and forest products that uses Globalstar’s mobile satellite phones to reduce overhead and improve employee safety. Steve Chaplin, a Field Engineer for Weyerhaeuser commented that Globalstar's phones work even in the densest forest areas, and can therefore be used to communicate in emergencies.
