GoBee Bike was a Hong Kong-based company that developed and launched a bicycle-sharing system for major cities. It was founded in 2017, and in addition to operating in Hong Kong, the company launched its offerings in France and Italy. GoBee Bike was forced to cease operations in July 2018 after it experienced losses from high maintenance costs.
The GoBee Bike system had software and hardware components. The software was an app that users could download so they could find and rent bikes. The app had a QR code scanner so users could register, pay a deposit, and unlock and rent the bikes. After paying the deposit, users could ride the bike anywhere within the city at a rate of less than one United States dollar per hour. There were no docks for the bikes, as the locks for them could be activated via GPS.
The hardware consisted of bikes and charging stations. The bikes used solar technology to power the lights that could be used for night riding. The colors of the bikes varied from city to city, but many of them were neon green so they could be easily identified.
In 2018, GoBee Bike had to close down operations. The company stated it had lost too much money from maintenance costs, and many of its bikes ended up in rivers, abandoned, stolen, or damaged.
