GoCardless was founded by Matt Robinson, Hiroki Takeuchi, and Tom Blomfield in 2011. The London-founded company developed a platform that allows customers to pay businesses through recurring or one-off bank payments or automated clearing house (ACH) transfers. The product is most commonly used for B2B transactions, such as invoicing, paying for items or services as installments, or recurring subscription payments (SaaS services).
GoCardless developed its global ACH network, also known as its global debit network, to reduce the overhead costs of money processing in business transactions, making checks, money orders, credit cards, and traditional cash transactions. The GoCardless global debit network is operational and available in over 30 countries around the world through an API cloud-based platform.
In December of 2020, GoCardless secured $95M in Series F funding from Bain Capital, which secured GoCardless the future title of "unicorn," a term used in the venture capital industry to describe a privately-held startup that is valued at $1 billion or more. After the Series F round, GoCardless was valued at $970 million, most accurately described as a "soonicorn" status.
