Geography
Distance to Donetsk: by road — 37 km, by railway — 53 km.
The city is located on the western spurs of the Donetsk Ridge. 29 rivers flow through the city, but not a single river crosses it. In the city there are sources of such rivers as Lugan (a tributary of the Seversky Donets), Bakhmut (a tributary of the Seversky Donets), Korsun (a tributary of the Krynka). All are rivers of the Sea of Azov basin.

292.25 thousand inhabitants (2001) with territories subordinate to the City Council 314.66 thousand inhabitants. According to the census, Ukrainian is used by 15.3% of the population in everyday life. The population as of May 1, 2013 is 276,330 people. Decreased by 16% since the 1989 census as a result of outflow and negative natural increase.
Birth rate - 6.6 per 1,000 people; mortality - 18.6; natural decline - -12; the migration balance is negative (-1.8 per 1,000 people).
