HackerNoon is a free online technology blog. The publication was launched in January 2016 under the name Hacker Daily by ArtMap Inc. founder and CEO David Smooke, who also serves as HackerNoon's CEO. In addition to its in-house team of eighteen, HackerNoon features over 35,000 contributing writers publishing stories related to technology, cryptocurrency, start-ups, and more, and averages between 5 million and 8 million monthly readers.
HackerNoon has its origins in January 2013, when Smooke founded ArtMap Inc., a digital publishing company. ArtMap started more than one hundred sites before launching the Hacker Daily blog on Medium in January 2016. In April 2016, the blog rebranded and moved to Hackernoon.com, adopting the slogan "how hackers start their afternoons." HackerNoon began to gain momentum, reaching 1 million monthly readers in May 2017. COO Linh Dao Smooke joined the HackerNoon team in August of that same year.
HackerNoon continued building its readership through the end of 2017. 2018 saw HackerNoon serve as the media partner for the SXSW Hackathon and reject an offer from Medium to purchase Hackernoon.com. The company would go on to raise $1,070,000 in crowdfunding and be awarded a $100,000 hosting grant from Google Cloud by the end of the year. In 2020, HackerNoon raised $1.5 milliion from web monetization provider Coil, which gave the company a pre-money valuation of $11.5 million.
