Hakuto (ハクト) was founded in the Netherlands in 2008. Originally known as White Label Space, the team was made up of space professionals worldwide who competed in the Google Lunar X PRIZE (GLXP). White Label Space Japan LLC was established on September 10, 2010, by Japan-based team members.
After European-based members ceased substantial involvement, White Label Space Japan was renamed to ispace Inc., with co-founder Takeshi Hakameda taking over as CEO on January 30, 2013. Later that year, the GLXP team announced an official name change to Hakuto, the same name as its Unit 2 Rover Prototype (PM-2).
Despite multiple contracts to deploy its rover with other GLXP teams, Hakuto did not succeed in landing its rover on the moon. X Prize founder and chairman Peter Diamandis announced on January 23, 2018, that none of the five remaining GLXP finalists would be able to launch by the March 31, 2018 deadline, and the prize would go unclaimed.
ispace announced a restructuring of its lunar sector in August 2019, naming its program "Hakuto-R," after the former GLXP team.
