Educated at King's College London.
He began as a stagehand in New York.
By 1909 he was running a small movie theater in Pennsylvania.
Two years later he was hired by Carl Lemmle as a screenwriter, and the following year he made his first short film.
In 1915 he signed a contract with William Fox. Since 1923, he collaborated with Paramount.
In 1934, he returned to Britain. In 1940, he retired.
