Hermann Alexander Diels (1848-1922) was a German historian, academic, and philologist who was born in Biebrich (Wiesbaden) and died in Dahlem (Berlin). Diels was a citizen of the German Empire. He was educated at the University of Bonn and Humboldt University of Berlin. Hermann Usener served as Diels' doctoral advisor.
As an academic, Diels had multiple occupations throughout his life. In addition to being a historian, academic, and philologist, he also served as the father of Otto Diels, a chemist and Nobel laureate, and Ludwig Diels, a botanist. Diels supervised doctoral students, including conductor Ernst Hoffmann and classicist Felix Jacoby.
