Homejoy was a San Francisco-based company providing a platform for users to connect with professional housecleaners. The company was founded in 2010 by siblings Aaron Chueng and Adora Chueng as Pathjoy. The website first launched in 2012, and by 2013 had a presence in thirty-one cities and over one hundred employees in addition to over 1000 contractors. All cleaners would be screened and have a background check, giving customers extra assurance that their home was in safe hands. The goal of Homejoy founders was to make the services accessible and affordable; all cleanings were $20 per hour, with a minimum of two and half hours per clean. By 2015, Homejoy was active in thirty-five cities including Canada and London.
The company received funding from a variety of investors including Google Ventures, Y Combinator, and 500 Startups. In 2013, Homejoy raised a $38 million in a series B round from First Round Capital, Max Levchin, Mike Hirshland, Oliver Jung and Redpoint Ventures, in addition to a $1.7 million seed round from Andreessen Horowitz, First Round Capital and Max Levchin that same year.
The company closed in July of 2015. The company had fallen short of funding goals in addition to trying to resolve worker classification issues that had resulted in four law suits against the company.
