Hugo Steinhaus (1887-1972) was a mathematician from Poland. He was born in Jasło and died in Wrocław. Steinhaus obtained his education at the University of Göttingen and Lviv University.
Steinhaus was a prominent figure in the field of mathematics, having worked with esteemed mathematician David Hilbert as his doctoral advisor. In his career, he guided several doctoral students, including Stefan Banach, Władysław Orlicz, Juliusz Schauder, Mark Kac, Józef Łukaszewicz, Stanisław Trybuła, Zygmunt Wilhelm Birnbaum, Aleksander Rajchman, and Stanisław Świerczkowski.
Steinhaus' notable works in mathematics include the Uniform boundedness principle, Steinhaus–Moser notation, Steinhaus–Johnson–Trotter algorithm, and Steinhaus theorem.
