Hutchinson Builders was founded in Brisbane, Queensland on January 29, 1912, and its first project was the construction of a new kitchen at Fort Lytton for the Queensland government. The company has 1,600 employees, builds over 300 projects a year, and had a turnover of $2.4 billion in 2017.
Hutchinson Builders is a family business spanning five generations and 106 years, working on projects around the world including Canada and Japan. Hutchinson Builder's introduction to Smart Badge came about when they were looking for a solution to better manage contact tracing and on-site manual entry/exit requirements. Hutchinson’s wanted a technology solution to remove the manual element of tracing, which was affecting staff productivity, but also to minimise the risk of human error. So, in 1912, the company was founded on a century of service to the construction industry and is a testament to the dedication, experience and integrity of the company in everything we do.

Hutchinson Builder’s trial of Smart Badge was conducted across a two-week period from 05 October 2020 and involved 100 on-site workers at the Fishermen’s Bend Secondary College build in Port Melbourne. Based on OH&S and staff feedback, the type of devices used were the IP67 waterproof watch bands, along with lanyards, for non-trade on-site guests. A total of three nodes were deployed; two nodes covering the wider site area of 12000m2 including a four-storey vertical building including entry & exit points, while one node was used in the lunchroom to manage capacity limits. Devices were issued to workers upon the commencement of the trial and individuals held onto their allocated device for the duration of their work on site.Additional devices were available for short stay trades or guests at the site registration office. These were returned upon exit.
