In its 2011 definition of cloud computing, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) defines hybrid cloud computing:

The cloud infrastructure is a composition of two or more distinct cloud infrastructures (private, community, or public) that remain unique entities, but are bound together by standardized or proprietary technology that enables data and application portability (e.g., cloud bursting for load balancing between clouds).

In a subsequent document published by NIST, detailing the organization's Cloud Computing Synopsis and Recommendations, contains a diagram showing the possible configurations of a hybrid cloud computing environment.
