I. M. Pei was born on April 26, 1917, in Guangzhou, China. He held citizenship in both Taiwan and the United States, and was a renowned architect. Pei studied at multiple prestigious institutions, including the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of Pennsylvania, Harvard University, Harvard Graduate School of Design, and MIT School of Architecture and Planning.
He founded the architecture firm Pei Cobb Freed & Partners and was the creator of numerous significant buildings and projects. Among his notable works are the Bank of China Tower in Hong Kong, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the Luce Memorial Chapel, the Louvre Pyramid, the MasterCard International Global Headquarters, and The Garden Hotel in Guangzhou. He also designed the Des Moines Art Center, the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center, and the National Museum of Singapore.
Throughout his illustrious career, I. M. Pei received numerous awards, such as the Medal of Freedom, the Praemium Imperiale, the Royal Gold Medal, the AIA Gold Medal, and the Pritzker Prize. He passed away on May 16, 2019, in Manhattan, New York.
