iCloud is Apple's cloud storage and cloud computing system for securely storing photos, files, notes, passwords, and other data, across multiple devices. iCloud allows for the simple sharing of data with friends and family while also keeping users' data backed up and automatically synced across all their Apple devices.
iCloud software is built into each Apple device and can be set up by signing in with an Apple ID and choosing the apps to use with the iCloud and which iCloud features to turn on or off. iCloud settings can be customized for each device and are accessible from non-Apple devices using iCloud for Windows or from a web browser.
The cloud storage software includes a free email account and five GB of free storage. Apple's premium cloud subscription service iCloud+ offers additional storage along with features including Hide My Email and HomeKit Secure Video support.
Apple announced iCloud in May 2011 as a replacement for previous online media service MobileMe, with a full release on October 12th, 2011.
