ID.me is the provider of a digital identity network that allows users to prove and share their identity online. The company was co-founded in 2010 by Blake Hall, Tanel Suurhans and Matthew Thompson. Hall and Suurhans serve as ID.me's CEO and CTO, respectively, while Thompson served as the company's president from 2010 until his departure in 2015. ID.me provides identity proofing, authentication, and group affiliation verification for both government and business across multiple sectors. As of 2021, the company as more than 55 million members, as well as partnerships with twenty-seven states, several federal agencies, and 400 retailers.
Initially developed to aid group affiliation identification online, ID.me now offers a wide range of verification services, which include online group affiliation identification, identity verification, multi-factor authentication, and document verification. To have one's identity verified, ID.me offers users three identity verification methods. Users can confirm their identity online using remote verification of physical IDs and mobile network operator (MNO) data, along with fraud and compliance checks. Users also have the option to confirm their identity with Virtual In-Person proofing, done via an online video conference, or In-Person at retail locations through ID.me's partnership with identity and background check company Sterling. Once verified, users will not have to re-verify their identity in the future, and it can be accepted across any organizations that are integrated with ID.me.
